Ratio in AeroPress: Concentration and Versatility
How the water-to-coffee ratio in AeroPress defines concentration, body, and flavor profile. Practical ranges for each brewing style.
The ratio that changes everything
Most brewing methods operate within a narrow water-to-coffee ratio range. Espresso sits between 1:1.5 and 1:3. V60 runs from 1:13 to 1:17. French Press stays around 1:12–1:16.
AeroPress breaks that constraint. It can be brewed at ratios from 1:6 to 1:15, making it the most flexible method in the simulator. This range isn't just numerical — it qualitatively changes the type of beverage you produce.
At identical grind, temperature, and time, a 1:6 ratio produces a concentrated, dense, short beverage. A 1:15 ratio produces a more open cup with less body and greater volume. These are two distinct tasting experiences, not just two versions of the same drink at different intensity levels.
The mechanism: immersion and simultaneous dilution
AeroPress works by immersion: coffee rests in direct contact with water for a period before you press the plunger. This makes ratio work differently than in a drip method.
In V60, more water means more water passing through the coffee bed, more cumulative contact time, and therefore more total extraction. In AeroPress the relationship is similar but the mechanism differs: because it's immersion, the amount of water you add directly determines the concentration of the liquid in contact with the coffee.
In the simulator, ratio contributes up to 15 points to the extraction index, calculated as ratioN = (ratio − 6) / 9. Moving from 1:6 to 1:15 can add up to 15 extraction points — equivalent to shifting the grind several steps finer.
This has a practical consequence: at higher ratios, the same grind and time will extract more solubles. If you're already in the balanced zone at 1:8, moving to 1:13 without adjusting anything else can push you toward overextraction.
Sensory effect: body, sweetness, and concentration
Beyond its impact on the extraction index, ratio in AeroPress has direct sensory effects that are independent of the calculated extraction:
Body. A lower ratio (more concentrated) directly increases body. Moving from 1:15 to 1:6 can add around 10 body points on the flavor radar. This reflects real-world behavior: more coffee dissolved in less water produces a denser, heavier mouthfeel.
Sweetness. A lower ratio also slightly pushes sweetness upward. Concentration makes sweet compounds more perceptible relative to total volume.
What ratio doesn't directly change: acidity depends mainly on temperature and extraction, not ratio. Bitterness and astringency are more tied to the extraction index than to ratio itself.
Practical ranges by target style

The 1:9–1:11 range is the most common in published AeroPress recipes. It allows easy extraction adjustment through grind or time without ratio becoming an additional confounding variable.
Low ratios (1:6–1:8) are used primarily when AeroPress is prepared as a base for milk drinks, or when seeking an espresso-like experience without a machine. They require finer grind or longer time to compensate for the reduced water volume and reach the balanced zone.
High ratios (1:12–1:15) work well with light-roast, washed-process single origins, where the goal is clarity and defined acidity. Since they increase the extraction index, it's advisable to open up the grind slightly to avoid overextraction.
Interaction with other variables
Ratio doesn't work in isolation. Its effects are amplified or offset by the other AeroPress variables:
Grind: the highest-weight factor in AeroPress extraction (32 points vs. ratio's 15). If you move the ratio up, consider opening the grind slightly to keep extraction balanced.
Temperature: higher temperature means more extraction. Combined with a high ratio, this can quickly lead to overextraction. With a low ratio and also lower temperature (80–85 °C), you can prepare a concentrated AeroPress with a very different profile from classic espresso.
Time: more time increases extraction. At high ratios, reducing time is one way to offset the increase in extraction without touching the grind.
Pressure: pressure in AeroPress affects body and bitterness but not the extraction index directly. It's a secondary adjustment, useful for refining the profile once ratio, grind, and time are calibrated.
